Cheques may be reprieved
 Cheques may be reprieved The demise of the cheque, may yet be reversed. MPs on the Treasury Committee have announced that they are to reopen their enquiry into plans to phase out cheques which may mean they are granted a reprieve. Banking industry body The Payments Council said in 2009 that cheques would be phased out by 2018. Small business groups in particular were against the plan as cheques are routinely used by them to pay each other for supplies and work. Pensioners groups were also very critical of the move. The Payments Council has now said cheques will only be phased out if viable alternatives are in place.
